Why look beyond Cursor

Cursor is a strong AI code editor, but it is not the only option — and it is not the right option for everyone. Common reasons to look elsewhere include:

  • Cloud-processing concerns. Cursor sends code to external servers for AI processing, which some teams cannot accept.
  • Subscription cost. The free tier has limits; the Pro plan costs $20/month per developer.
  • Workflow mismatch. Cursor's aggressive, multi-file AI model is powerful but can feel intrusive if you prefer to stay in control.
  • Ecosystem lock-in. Some developers prefer editors that don't require a proprietary fork of VS Code.

The alternatives

Windsurf

Windsurf takes the opposite design approach: AI assistance that stays in the background until you need it. Inline completions appear at your cursor; multi-file rewrites are available but not the default. Startup is fast, memory usage is lower, and the free tier is more generous.

Read our Windsurf review for a deeper look.

GitHub Copilot (in VS Code)

Copilot was the first widely adopted AI coding assistant and remains the most popular. Running as a VS Code extension, it avoids the need to switch editors entirely. The trade-off: it does not have Cursor's repository-wide context model, and multi-file editing is less cohesive.

Zed

Zed is a native, Rust-based editor designed for raw speed. It has added AI features (completions, inline chat) but treats them as enhancements to a fundamentally fast editor, not the core product. If editor performance matters more to you than AI sophistication, Zed is worth trying.

Cody (Sourcegraph)

Cody leverages Sourcegraph's code intelligence to provide AI assistance with enterprise-grade context. It understands large monorepos, can search across repositories, and integrates with VS Code. It is the strongest option for teams with massive codebases and existing Sourcegraph infrastructure.

What is not on this list

We deliberately excluded editors that add AI as a minor plugin feature rather than a core capability. This list will grow as we complete hands-on testing of additional tools.
